The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications for Assistant Professor in Korean Studies (tenure-track, starting July 1, 2016).

Applicants for this position are expected to have in hand a PhD degree in Korean Studies or a related field, such as Literature or Cultural Studies with a focus on Korea. Period and specialization are open, but research/teaching expertise in translation studies and contemporary popular culture will be assets for the position. Applicants must be fluent in the Korean language, be capable of offering advanced courses in Korean and be able to publish research findings in English.

The successful candidate will assume a leadership role in advancing Korean Studies courses and programs at the University of Alberta, and of representing the university in international venues. A research profile commensurate with employment in a highly ranked research-intensive university and relevant teaching experience or promise of superior teaching ability are also expected. Enthusiasm for teaching within and beyond the area of PhD specialization, including introductory courses on East Asia, and for teaching and supervising graduate students is expected.

Financial support for this position has been generously provided by the Korea Foundation. Participation in the preparation of annual reports for the Korea Foundation is an expectation for the position.

Courses on East Asia have been offered regularly at the University of Alberta since 1961, making our program one of the oldest in Western Canada. Originally founded in 1981, the Department of East Asian Studies (http://www.eastasianstudies.ualberta.ca/) has twelve faculty members in East Asian literature, culture and linguistics and employs another twenty contract instructors in a typical year. The Department offers four-year language programs and related classes in each of Japanese, Chinese and Korean, teaching approximately 2,500 undergraduate students each year. It also enrols students from across the world in its popular MA program. Seeking to add to our current Korean course offerings and faculty, which include courses in Korean language and a faculty lecturer dedicated to teaching and administering them, the department is eager to welcome a Korea specialist who can help us sustain our growth.
