FULBRIGHT FORUM!!

Fulbright in Seoul (the Korean American Educational Commission) is pleased
to invite you to attend the first Fulbright Forum for 2003, which will be
held on Friday, February 28, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. at the Commission offices in
Mapo.

The speaker this month will be Dr. Richard Nichols, Professor of Theatre,
Penn State University, Fulbright research scholar in Korea. Professor
Nichols' presentation will be: Contemporary Korean Theatre: "Oedi Gayo?"

Thirty years ago, a major figure in the Korean theatre lamented that there
were few good plays being written, the level of acting was poor, and
performance spaces were not conducive to high quality theatre. In the early
1990s, one critic found the theatre to be "drifting aimlessly." In the
ensuing years, rays of hope have been visible, to be sure, but, if the
contemporary Korean theatre has found an artistic 'compass' in the new
century, the direction is not clear. Despite its rise to prominence on the
Asian and world theatre stages, Korean theatre wanders "yeogi cheogi" in
search of definition and identity. Dr. Richard Nichols has seen more than
seventy-five Korean theatre productions in the last two years. His
presentation will provide insights into the complex nature of Korean theatre
and the challenges it faces as it attempts to be both Korean and
international in its outlook.

The Fulbright Forum is an opportunity to learn about Korea and to reconnect
with students and scholars who have been traveling over the winter. We
welcome to the Forum all Fulbrighters - senior scholars, graduate students,
and ETAs - as well as Board Members, Fulbright alumni, Peace Corps alumni,
Korean studies scholars, foreign graduate students, interested visitors, and
other friends of Korea and members of the Fulbright family.

The presentation will be followed by a buffet reception (in lieu of dinner.)
We hope many friends will come to enjoy the lecture, the discussion, and the
food.
