CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

The Institute for East Asian Studies of the University of Duisburg-Essen,
the East Asian Institute of the University of Vienna and the Austrian
Economic Chamber are jointly preparing a conference on

“Innovation and Technology in Korea Recent Advances and Options for
International Cooperation”

6-7 October, Vienna, Austria

Globally, Korea ranks among the top nations in terms of innovative
performance. Many highly innovative, international companies have chosen
Korea as the location for business and research activities. Korean research
and development expenditures have surpassed those of Italy or Canada in
absolute terms. Expressed as a percentage of GDP, Korea’s R&D efforts are
even higher than those of Germany, France or the UK. Although the facts are
impressive, Korea has not yet attracted the degree of attention it deserves
in Europe.

Hence, the purpose of this conference is to provide a comprehensive
up-to-date picture of innovation in Korea. Moreover, it looks into
experiences with and options for international research cooperation with
Korea. The conference is addressed to academic experts and practitioners
from both policy and industry. Contributions in the following areas would
be greatly appreciated:
ü History of Korean science and technology policy and innovative
performance
ü Current structure of Korea’s innovation system
ü University-industry linkages in Korea
ü Innovation management of Korean firms
ü Industry studies of selected high tech industries like
semiconductors or pharmaceuticals
ü European-Korean technology transfer
ü Internationalization of R&D: experiences and opportunities for
cooperation

The organizers are in contact with leading publishers and intend to issue
selected contributions in an edited conference volume.
