Call for Papers
Online Teaching in Asian Humanities – Opportunities and Challenges
Deadline for Submission of Abstract: June 19, 2015

I am searching for 3-4 contributors to participate in a panel about
online teaching at the Association for Asian Studies 2016 Annual
Conference in Seattle, March 31-April 3, 2016.

There is insufficient research and publications about the advantages
or disadvantages of online classes in the Humanities. While some
administrators and professors consider the creation of online classes
to be an effective countermeasure to declining enrollment, instructors
are often discouraged by the significant amount of time and energy
required to redesign their existing courses for online use. Some
instructors believe that the unnecessary burden of creating online
courses mandated by their school might facilitate infringement of
their intellectual property rights when the course is taught by other
instructors and/or created in cooperation with multiple institutions.
Conversely, students appreciate the convenience, flexibility and
reduced cost of an online class, which also encourages shy students to
more actively participate in online class activities and discussions
than they would otherwise participate in a traditional face-to-face
class.

This panel will provide insights into innovative approaches to online
teaching (web-conferencing, hybrid method) and course redesign, and
discuss the opportunities and challenges of online classes in the
Asian Humanities. Appropriate papers will describe emerging methods
that optimize online teaching, discuss potential legal/copyright
issues as well as the consequences of collaborate efforts between
universities and government-funded institutions to create online
classes.

Please address questions and submissions to mstiller at ku.edu
