[KS] Mac Users / MS Word 2016 + Fonts

Dear All:

One last technical note that *may* later save you some time to find out 
what's going on.

Unrelated to Apple's new El Capitan OS version, there is another font 
related major change between the Mac versions of Microsoft Office 2011 
and the new 2016 release (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, 
OneNote): 
All MS Office packages for the Mac now come with FONTS as part of the 
application bundle itself. The "application bundle" that is the 
application itself, the application you double-click to open the 
program. So, MS Word, for example, is now about 1.75 GB large (before 
just 57 MB) because it includes, among other new resources, 450 MB of 
fonts ... see the full list below. Amongst those is also "Batang." The 
same applies to the other Office applications. However, each 
application includes a different number of fonts. Outlook, for example, 
does NOT include the "Batang" font.

Now, this means if you have a different, typically an older version of 
the "same" font already installed on your Mac, and then you use MS 
Word, that font will not be used but the one embedded in the MS Word 
app. -- while, when you use another application, then the font of the 
same name in your OS system's font folder will be used. FOR EXAMPLE, I 
have an older, 2010 version of the "Calibri" font that came with MS 
Office 2011. But the ITALICS version of that font looks now quite 
different in MS Word 2016, much slimmer, as it has obviously been 
re-designed (while still bearing the same name). The same applies -- 
and this might be a more serious problem, and this is mostly why I post 
this -- to "Batang" with its East Asian characters. MS Office 2011 
installed version 1.5, while it is now at version 5.0 (same as on PCs 
for a longer time already), and there *are* some differences there. 
This is now a source of trouble, and you may want to know why this 
happens if you see it. (Leaving the older font in your system's font 
folder won't help, as MS Word won't use that!)

If you "start out" fresh, then the best thing to do SEEMS to be to also 
install all the fonts coming with MS Word 2016 into your system's font 
folder. You can do so be following below instructions -- BUT please 
read all before possibly doing this:
 Applications 
    --> right-click on "Microsoft Word" [2016] --> Show Package Content
          --> open the folders and go to "Resources" --> Fonts
             --> double-click each font, it will open "FontBook" 
               --> install each font
That means, you will make these exact same fonts available to all our 
other applications.
The again, it also means, if you worked with older versions of some 
fonts before, you maybe up for some unpleasant surprises. There is no 
solution to all this!

Anyway, this is the situation. The absolute only texts that will last 
more than 15 years still seem to be good old printed books and journals 
:)  Anything digital does not even survive as long as the spider behind 
your desk.
