- Call for Papers and First Notice -
The Korean Studies Curriculum at the Department of Italian Instituteof Oriental Studies of SapienzaUniversity of Rome will host the 29th biennial AKSE Conference from 11(Thursday)to 14 (Sunday) April 2019 in Rome, Italy.
The Association for Korean Studies in Europe, founded in 1977, isthe main scholarly society for Korean Studies in greater Europe. Its objectivesare to stimulate and coordinate academic Korean studies in all countries ofEurope, and to contribute to the spread of knowledge of Korea among a widerpublic. The biennial AKSE conferences provide an opportunity for Europeanscholars of Korean studies to gather and exchange research results. Hosting themembership meeting, they are the most important event of the association assuch. AKSE conferences are also a way for European scholars to communicate withthe global academic community. We thus warmly welcome non‐Europeans and non‐members.

Theopening ceremony will be held at Sapienza University of Rome. RegistrationAbstract submission will entail preliminary registration (notbinding). Formal online registration for all active (presenting and chairing)and passive participants including general audience, non-presenting AKSEmembers, and students will open on 16November 2018 and last until 1February2019. Detailed online registration guidelines are due to follow.
For submitters
1) Subjects and general guidelines
∙ Both individual abstractsand panel proposals can be submitted. Panelproposals will be treated preferentially. All paper proposals willreceive a double-blind assessment. We strongly encourage panel diversity(institutional, national, disciplinary), and this will be an importantcriterion in the final selection process. ∙ Subjects in all areas of Korean Studies are welcome. During theabstract submission, submitters will have to choose a field for theirpresentation (e.g. literature, history, Modern Korea, social studies etc.). Thelist of these fields will follow-up via the conference website. ∙ All abstracts should bein English, but the official languagesof the conference are: French, German, Korean, and English. You must specify thepresentation language if it isdifferent from English.∙ Abstracts/panel proposals will have to be submitted from 15 May – 30 July 2018 online via aconference management system which will be at your disposal on the conferencewebsite. 2) Presentation guidelines∙ Each panel will last 105 minutes and typically consist of fourpresentations.∙ In case of an organized panel, a fifth person can be invited aspanel chair by the panel organizer, or one of the four panellists can act aschair.∙ There are no set discussants. The panel chair can act as discussantif invited to do so.∙ In favour of interactive discussion, each presentation should notexceed 15 minutes (60 minutes for presentations, 45 minutes for discussion). 3) Note on panels∙ Panel organizers should prepare a proposal for a joint panel indicatinga concise title (e.g. “Korean Diaspora in US”), keywords (up to three), thenumber of panellists (five in case of a non-presenting chair or four in case ofa presenting chair), and a panel abstract of about 500 words (or 3295 characters).∙ Each panellist should also prepare an abstract of about 500 words(or 3295 characters) including the title and keywords of their own paper. 4) Note on individual papers∙ Individual presenters should prepare an abstract of about 500 words(or 3295 characters).∙ This should include the title and keywords (up to three). Detailed online submission guidelines will be announced soon.
Conference fees
1) Conference fees listed below include:
∙ basic accommodation (more information will be on the website)∙ conference attendance∙ opening and closing ceremonies with dinner∙ coffee breaks, and lunch in the venue on each conference day∙ conference materials (e.g. guide, programme, papers in USB flashdrive)
2) Not included:
∙ travel to and from Rome∙ AKSE membership fees (these will be separately collected by the AKSEtreasurer, more information will be on the website) 3) Categories and rates Based on current pricing informationand subsidy expectations, we expect to be able to offer the following rates forparticipants:
∙ non-member not presenting ca500 EUR∙ non-member active (presenting or chairing) participant ca 400 EUR∙ AKSE member passive participant (notpresenting) ca400 EUR
∙ AKSE member active participant ca 350 EUR∙ student not presenting ca200 EUR ∙ student active participant ca 150 EUR ∙ Participants (members or not) not presenting, not staying athotel ca 250 EUR Registration feesAt the time of your online registration, you will be asked to pay anon-refundable registration fee in the amount of ca 200 EUR via Paypal through the conference managementsystem. The registration fee for students is 50 EUR. This online transfer registration fee will be used as a down paymenton your conference fee, the remaining amount of which will be collected lateron site. Further information about online registration will be announced in duecourse.
Travel grants
Graduate students whosepapers have been accepted are entitled to apply for a travel grant by writingto the AKSE president. The availability and actual amount of the grants dependon funding availability and will be decided by the AKSE Council. Additional information on the websiteFurther information including accommodation surcharges, travel etc.is provided on the conference website.
