New foreign language book/DVD shop by Kyongbok Palace

For any of you in or near Seoul who might have missed articles in the English language papers, there is a very attractive new bookstore you should know about near Kyongbok Palace. "Seoul Selection," opened several months ago by a former cultural affairs reporter, offers well over 100 titles of English and other foreign language books relating to Korea (including some new ones I had never seen before), plus DVDs of Korean films with English/Japanese/Chinese/other subtitles, CDs, artworks, and other items stocked for foreigners interested in Korea. The owner also distributes foreign language books to other selected outlets around Seoul.

Coffee and other beverages are available at a small counter. The owner shows English-subtitled Korean films every Saturday and Sunday (at 11 a.m.) and Wednesday evening -- free of charge (!); this weekend's film is "My Heart" ("Cho^ng"), released in 2000. He also sponsors other events such as artist's lectures and gatherings for English teachers, and publishes a well written weekly e-mail newsletter with a finely honed list of cultural events happening in Seoul. Check out the website at http://www.seoulselection.com for more information. See the "What is Seoul Selection" page for background on the place. The owner is cordial, articulate, and open to suggestions on how to improve his admittedly struggling enterprise.

I don't have any financial or personal stake in this operation, but as an occasional customer and film fan I would certainly like it to survive, and would thus like to spread the word to others who might be interested in its many valuable offerings. This isn't quite a discussion of Korean studies, but the shop can certainly encourage or facilitate some.

Seoul Selection is in the basement of the Ch'ulp'an Hoegwan (Korean Publishers Association), beside the Yi Dynasty guard tower at the SE corner of Kyongbok Palace. (There's a map on the "Contact Us" web page.) A large sign marks its entrance from the sidewalk out front. You can park free in the Kyongbok Palace underground garage across the street during the day. Phone is 02-734-9565, FAX 734-9563, e-mail: selector@seoulselection.com.
