<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman">The book that Prof. Kim-Renaud selected, <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Encounter</I>, is a fascinating one.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN><SPAN style="mso-bidi-font-size: 8.0pt">Winner of the 1986 Grand Prix of the Republic of Korea Literature Award, this novel of early nineteenth century Korea recreates the lives of the great scholar known as Tasan and his nephew St. Paul Hasang. Exiled for 18 years to remote provinces for his fascination with Western Learning (Catholicism), Tasan encounters shamans, peasants, Buddhist monks and other people whom he would not otherwise have met. A subplot of this richly detailed historical novel is the story of three daughters of a prominent Catholic aristocrat, which affords readers vivid glimpses into Chosôn-dynasty womenĄŻs lives and challenges the stereotype of the subservient Confucian women.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">
