<DIV class=RTE>The "Koguryo Research Foundation, Seoul (Pres. Kim Jung Bae) and the Korean Studies Section of the University of Hamburg/Germany have started planning a conference on (working title) "The Language(s) of Koguryo and the Reconstruction of Old Korean and Neighboring Languages".</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>Time: Middle of September 2005</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>Conference languages: English, Korean</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>Travel grants will be available for active participants in case this is necessary.</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>Topics could include, for example:</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE> </DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>- Koguryo(nic) language(s)</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>- reconstruction of Old/Early Korean</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>- inner reconstruction problems</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>- problems in the reconstruction of Old/Ancient/EarlyMiddle/LateMiddle Chinese </DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>- problems in North-East Chinese dialectal variation during the afore-mentioned period</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>- can Korean pre-Hwunmin-cengum writing systems help?</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>- possible comparisons with neighboring languages</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>This is the 1st posting, and is intended to find out whether there is enough interest for such a conference, and who would be interested and willing to attend (actively or passively).</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>No final committment is necessary at this stage, but the organizers would be happy to have some general information about possible attendance. Your first reaction should be directed to</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>Please tell us whether you are interested in general, and in case you are able to do so at the moment, tell us whether you are willing to present a paper. In the latter case, if possible, please, give a preliminary title or area of research paper you intend to present. Given the current state of reseach, the organizers are also encouraging "working papers" of a still preliminary nature.</DIV>
