Professor Robinson,

Thank you for sharing your personal memory of Ralph's hwangap. Susan was just about to turn ninety when I last visited her in Los Angeles in December. She is still remarkably healthy for her age (I presume her active early adult years as a naval officer and an amateur baseball player paid off). The restaurant you went to must have been Moongate (the Ahn family business which opened in Panorama City in 1954). While I was still doing my Ph.D. work at UCLA, I attended the Tosan symposium in Los Angeles (held in Aug. 2001 when Tosan's statue was erected in front of the Riverside City Hall) and Susan gave a rather moving speech. I also interviewed Ralph and he had a lot to offer in terms of movie memories since he was an on-and-off actor himself. It's so amazing to consider the magnitude of the Ahn family's legacy
in Korean American history -- a symbolic pioneering family who successfully assimilated into American society.

>Thank you for your fulsome and enlightening update on the Ahn family and the cinematic doings of the boys. When I was in Los Angeles working at USC (late 1980s) I went to an elaborate hwangap for Ralph. It was a who's who of the LA Korean American second generation and their family plus a generous attendance of Koreans from the Consulate and some of the Korean companies in town. It was a study in different identities. Ralph's sister Susan gave a speech speech talking about their youth together in LA and to the horrors of the Diplomatic contingent was rather tough on the memory of her famous father who was absent during her teen years. The venue was a Chinese restaurant in Panorama City bedecked with beaded curtains and with the walls festooned with stills from Philip's films. I should have taped the procedings.
