<P>I should point out that the correct order of birth for the Ahn children is: (1) Philip (1905); (2) Philson (1912); (3) Susan (1915); (4) Soorah (1917); and (5) Ralph (1926). Ralph never saw his father since Tosan left the United States for the last time in 1926 before he was born. </P>
<P>The Ahn family claims that Philip is the first Korean-American born in the continental United States (excluding Hawaii). Can anyone verify this claim? It makes sense since An Ch'ang-ho and Yi Hye-ry^on were the first married Korean couple admitted to the U.S. According to the January 2003 issue of KOREAM (Vol. 14, No. 1), the first American-born child of early Korean immigrants is Ethan Sungkoo Kiehm (the son of Dosam Kim and Soon-nie Hong) who was born on a Hawaii sugar plantation in December 1903. But what about the continental U.S.? Does anyone know a precursor to Philip Ahn (birthdate: March 29, 1905)?</P>

<DIV></DIV>>caption to which gave the Korean names of all the Ahn children, and
<DIV></DIV>>their mother, who was Yi Hyery^on. So now I'm able to answer my own
<DIV></DIV>>question. Earlier I had learned the original name of Ralph in a
<DIV></DIV>>private message from Hye Seung Chung--thanks Hye Seung! Here are
<DIV></DIV>>the original names of all the Ahn children in order of birth. The
<DIV></DIV>>tollimja for the daughters is (arumda^ul) Su, for the sons
<DIV></DIV>>(pand^usi) P'il. 1. Susan (+ san, "mountain"), 2. P'illip (+ lip,
<DIV></DIV>>"stand"), 3. Sura (+ la as in Silla), 4. P'ils^n (+ s^on as in
<DIV></DIV>>Chos^on), and 5. Ralph = P'iry^ong (+ y^ong "hero"). Ralph's name
<DIV></DIV>>appears to have been too hard to anglicize, as I suspected.
