Korea had a great night at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World contest<BR>
- perhaps the world's leading song competition in Western classical music.<BR>
<BR>
The audience prize went to the London-based soprano Lee Hayoung,<BR>
although to general surprise she didn't make the final.<BR>
Her repertoire included "Snow" by Kim Hyokin.<BR>
<BR>
Although no one pointed it out, the overall winner, the US soprano<BR>
Nicole Cabell, is also one-quarter Korean - as well as black, and white.<BR>
In an earlier round, she sang a wonderful setting of the Langston Hughes poem <BR>
<I>Dream Variations </I>- the one that ends: "Night coming tenderly / Black like me."<BR>
<BR>
In a very different genre, one of the rising stars of r'n'b (which used to mean<BR>
something different), Amerie, is also of mixed Black and Korean origin.<BR>
Googling "Nicole Cabell" gives 322 entries; that number will grow.<BR>
The same exercise for "Amerie" yields over a million. Popular culture indeed!<BR>
<BR>
Back to classical music. One of the best young UK-based chamber ensembles<BR>
is the Emperor Trio, whose members cover the northeast Asian waterfront:<BR>
So-Ock Kim, violin<BR>
Li-Wei Qin, cello<BR>
Naomi Iwase, piano<BR>
<BR>
It would be nice if their three governments could achieve the same harmony.<BR>
