<P>The George Washington University hosts the 12th annual Hahn Moo-Sook (HMS) Colloquium in the Korean Humanities under the theme, "The Military and South Korean Society," sponsored by GW's Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures and the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, in cooperation with the Korea Institute of Harvard University. </P>

<P><STRONG>Eugene Y. Park</STRONG> of the University of California, Irvine will speak about "War and Peace in Pre-modern Korea: Institutional and Ideological Dimensions"; <STRONG>Seungsook Moon</STRONG> of Vassar College will speak on "Gender, Conscription, and Popular Culture in Contemporary Korea"; and <STRONG>Sheila Miyoshi Jager</STRONG> of Oberlin College and <STRONG>Col. Jiyul Kim</STRONG> at the U.S. Army War College will speak about "Good Brothers, Model Soldiers: South Korea's Blockbuster Films and the Post-Korean War Era."</P>
<P>Discussants are Professors <STRONG>Carter J. Eckert</STRONG> and <STRONG>David R. McCann</STRONG> of Harvard University, and <STRONG>John R. Merrill</STRONG> of the U.S. Department of State. </P>

<P>The HMS Colloquium in the Korean Humanities Series at GW provides a forum for academic discussion of Korean arts, history, language, literature, thought, and religious systems in the context of East Asia and the world. The colloquium series is made possible by an endowment established by the estate of Hahn Moo-Sook, one of Korea's most honored writers, in order to uphold her spirit of openness, curiosity, and education. </P>
