Studies Librarian for Asian and Asian-American Studies</font><font

Binghamton University Libraries provide information services to the
Binghamton University community through direct client assistance at
the reference and information services desks and through individual
consultation; through collection development and management of print
and electronic resources; and through a program of information
literacy. As part of this department, the incumbent is an integral
part of the team providing these high quality services. This position
reports to the Head of Reference & Electronic

responsibilities:</font><font face="Times New Roman" size="+3"

service at both the Bartle Library Reference Desk and the Science
Library Information Services Desk. Provide individual research
consultations. The reference and research activities are in alignment
with library-wide reference initiatives to support quality service and
a user-centered approach.</font><font face="Times New Roman"

2.<x-tab> </x-tab></font><font
face="Times New Roman" size="+2" color="#000000">Develop and manage
the collections in Asian and Asian-American Studies. Develop and
maintain liaison between the Libraries and the Asian and
Asian-American Studies department. Assess and develop scholarly print
and electronic resources from and about East Asia with a focus on
China, Japan and Korea. The Program in Asian and Asian American
Studies supports the study of Asia and transoceanic, transnational
Asian Diasporas of the world with emphasis on studies of Asian
histories, languages, and cultures within Asia as geographically
defined; studies of Asian Diasporas, with particular focus on Asians
of the Americas.</font><font face="Times New Roman" size="+3"
color="#000000"><br>
3.<x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Times New Roman" size="+2"
color="#000000">Participate in the Libraries instructional programs.
Plan and implement library-related instruction for Asian and
Asian-American Studies. Develop web-based guides and tutorials.
Develops and updates subject web pages and bibliographies in support
of research in Asian and Asian-American Studies.</font><font

Libraries to the appropriate academic departments and University
offices. Maintain close contact with academic departments and

interest in working with students and faculty; commitment to

Librarian for Asian and Asian American Studies</font><font

color="#000000">Cataloging Services provides a support service for
library patrons by providing bibliographic access and control through
the performance of a variety of Technical Services operations. The
Catalog Librarian for Asian and Asian American Studies serves as a
member of the team responsible for providing original and adjusted
cataloging and bibliographic control for a wide range of print and
non-print materials in various formats. The incumbent is responsible
for all levels of cataloging and authority work for Asian materials in
all formats. A strong commitment to service and patron access to
information is essential. The position reports to the Head of
Cataloging Services, with the Associate Director for Technical
Services and Budget as second-line supervisor.</font><font

and Responsibilities:</font><font face="Times New Roman" size="+3"

color="#000000">Cataloging emphasis will be on Asian languages,
checking and/or creating copy, adjusted and original records utilizing
both transliterated and vernacular language.</font><font
face="Times New Roman" size="+3" color="#000000"><br>
2.<x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Times New Roman"
size="+2" color="#000000">Within predefined limits using OCLC, RLIN,
and the Library Management System (ExLibris' Aleph 500), originally
catalogs or adjusts Asian cataloging records in all formats so they
conform to national and local standards and practices. Performs
associated authority control work as appropriate.</font><font
face="Times New Roman" size="+3" color="#000000"><br>
3.<x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Times New Roman" size="+2"
color="#000000">Working with cataloging staff and/or students designs,
creates training materials and supervises cataloging related projects
as assigned. Monitors progress of assigned projects and compiles
statistics as needed.</font><font face="Times New Roman" size="+3"

size="+2" color="#000000">Resolves complex bibliographic problems
associated with all current formats including but not limited to book,
serials and various media related items. Serves as a resource person
for CJK Unicode issues in the Aleph LMS.</font><font

color="#000000">Writes and maintains documentation relevant to the
cataloging operations including Aleph and Authority documentation

language communication skills; knowledge of current trends in
cataloging and the willingness to work with new concepts and
technologies; evidence of profession growth, service activities, and
contributions to the library profession to meet faculty criteria for
promotion and tenure; a commitment to providing a high level of

Advanced degree or graduate coursework in an area of Asian or Asian
American studies; demonstrated successful experience in cataloging,
serials, and/or authority control; experience with OCLC, RLLIN and/or
ExLibris; working knowledge of an additional CJK language; familiarity
with library automation developments and their application to CJK
materials, in particular Unicode.<br>
