I am particularly grateful for the reference to North Vietnam, because it may help us in explaining the mystery of the five-day process of establishing diplomatic relations. Namely, Qiang Zhai's book on China's involvement in the Indochina conflicts ("China and the Vietnam Wars") describes very accurately that the PRC recognized the DRV on January 18, whereas the USSR did it only on January 30, with the East European countries following suit in February. The authors of Istoria Vneshnei Politiki SSSR probably did not want to reveal that the Soviet government was only the second to recognize the DRV, and this is why they mentioned a two-week period instead of January 30. In the DPRK's case the reason must have been something else, but at least there is
some basis to suppose that the source may not have been completely reliable. Another list member just informed me that the USSR and the DPRK established diplomatic relations on October 12.</div> <div> </div> <div>All the best and thanks again,</div> <div>Balazs</div> <div><BR>A 1986 version of Istoria Vneshnei Politiki SSSR: 1945-1985 volume 2 published by what was then the Academy of Sciences of the USSR also lists the dates of 8-12 October 1948 for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and the DPRK. Unfortunately, I am not able to give any insight into why it was done over a period of 5 days as opposed to one. Looking through the list, however, it seems it was quite common. In fact, it sometimes took even longer. For example, relations with North Vietnam were established over the period from 14 to 30 January 1950.</div> <div>James
