<P>Dear Dr. Szalontai<BR><BR>A 1986 version of Istoria Vneshnei Politiki SSSR: 1945-1985 volume 2 published by what was then the Academy of Sciences of the USSR also lists the dates of 8-12 October 1948 for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and the DPRK. Unfortunately, I am not able to give any insight into why it was done over a period of 5 days as opposed to one. Looking through the list, however, it seems it was quite common. In fact, it sometimes took even longer. For example, relations with North Vietnam were established over the period from 14 to 30 January 1950.</P>
