</style><font face="굴림">The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies is pleased to announce the publication of the first book in the Seoul-California Series in Korean Studies, Choi Hyaeweol's <em>Gender and Mission Encounters in Korea: New Women. Old Ways</em>. We sincerely hope that the Seoul-California Series will help to increase the quality and quantity of monographs on Korean Studies, and count on your support to make this possible.<br /><br />Choi's pathbreaking book vividly traces the genealogy of modern womanhood in the encounters between Koreans and American Protestant missionaries in the early twentieth century. According to Namhee Lee (UCLA), it "approaches the transcultural and religious encounters of Korean and American women with a remarkable degree of sensitivity and nuance, as well as with judicious use of feminist and postcolonial theory. Its rich and diverse historical examples and illustrations are both engaging to read and meticulously documented."<br /><br />The Seoul-California Series in Korean Studies is a collaboration between International and Area Studies, University of California, Berkeley, and the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, Seoul National University. Each book in the series will be available in an innovative dual format: as a free digital edition, which will allow the work to reach a broad international audience, and as a reasonably priced paperback published by the University of California Press. <br /><br />For the digital edition, and for further information on how to order hard copies, please go to <a href="http://escholarship.org/uc/item0q65z7q9">http://escholarship.org/uc/item0q65z7q9</a> <br />For more information on the series and how to submit manuscripts, please contact <a href="mailto:ucias@berkeley.edu">ucias@berkeley.edu</a> or <a href="mailto:icks@snu.ac.kr">icks@snu.ac.kr</a>. <br /><br /></font><br><br>Program Coordinator<BR>
