The East<BR> Asian collection consists of nearly 800,000 volumes in Chinese,<BR> Japanese, and Korean languages of various formats. It also has a<BR> growing collection of electronic
resources.<BR> *ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:*<BR> Collection Development 35%<BR><BR> * Select materials in all format including electronic resources<BR> in Korean language as purchases, gifts, or exchanges; select<BR> materials on Korean studies in Western languages.<BR> * In consultation with the Curator of East Asian Collection,<BR> develop a long-term acquisitions policy; keep the Curator<BR> informed about important changes in academic programs and<BR> other academically-related matters affecting collection<BR> development and management responsibilities of assigned<BR>
disciplines.<BR> * Manage the acquisitions budget for Korean studies materials<BR> including funds from foundations and the Center for East Asian<BR> Studies.<BR> * Establish and maintain good relationships with dealers,<BR> electronic content providers, and exchange partners; maintain<BR> current knowledge of book market, trade, and e-resource<BR> development for Korean studies.<BR> * Work with the Curator of the East Asian Collection, Library<BR> Development Office, the Assistant Director for Collections,<BR> and other specialized staff to identify and develop donor<BR>
sources and special funding opportunities; participate in<BR> contacts with donors and potential donors including the<BR> preparation of reports and personal visits.<BR><BR> Reference and Public Services 20%<BR><BR> * Provide specialized reference service in person, by telephone,<BR> by e-mail, and mail; initiate specialized instruction<BR> opportunities for faculty and students regarding the Library<BR> and its resources as well as bibliographic methods and<BR> research strategies; offer general reader assistance<BR> pertaining to Korean studies or Korean resources to all patrons.<BR>
* Responsible for coordinating computer support and providing<BR> services to Korean studies e-resources; develop and maintain<BR> electronic finding aids and subject content on Korean studies<BR> for the East Asian Collection’s web page.<BR> * Communication with faculty and students in the assigned areas<BR> of responsibility. Apprise faculty, students, and staff of new<BR> publications, acquisitions, and services.<BR><BR> Technical Services 35%<BR><BR> * Under the direction of the Head of East Asia Technical<BR> Services, perform original cataloging for Korean materials in<BR> all
formats.<BR> * Advise technical services staff on matters relating to the<BR> ordering and processing of Korean materials.<BR> * Participate in formulating cataloging policy, priorities, and<BR> work procedures.<BR><BR> Other 10%<BR><BR> * Serve on Library committees and task-forces.<BR> * Submit a written annual report to the Curator of the East<BR> Asian Collection.<BR> * Participate in the activities of the library and scholarly<BR> organizations at the local, regional, national, and<BR> international level.<BR> * Assume other duties and responsibilities as
assigned<BR><BR> ** *QUALIFICATIONS*:<BR> Education: Graduate degree from an ALA accredited MLS or MLIS is<BR> required. An undergraduate or graduate degree in Korean Studies or<BR> in a social science or humanities discipline with a principal<BR> emphasis on Korea is highly desirable.<BR> Experience: Substantial experience in a research library directly<BR> related to the field of Korean studies is highly desirable as is<BR> knowledge of Korean publishing industry and the book trade. Evidence<BR> of special bibliographic and reference work is desirable. Experience<BR> or good knowledge of OCLC, AACR2, LCSH and LC classification system,<BR> and MARC21 format is required. Awareness of RDA and other metadata<BR> standards is
desirable.<BR> Skills: Demonstrated ability to work both independently and<BR> collaboratively in a changing and diverse environment is essential.<BR> Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students and<BR> staff; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications<BR> skills and a high degree of computer literacy are all required.<BR> Knowledge of electronic resources and information technology<BR> applications in Korean studies is desirable. Evidence of a<BR> commitment to ongoing professional development is required.<BR> Languages: Fluency in English and Korean languages including the<BR> ability to process Korean materials written in Hanmun (classical<BR> Chinese) is required.<BR> <BR> *The University
