<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">In
June 2010, scholars interested in Korean popular culture at US and South Korean
academic institutions gathered at UC Irvine to assess critically the inherent
problems of the dispersed state of Korean popular culture studies, and to
delineate future directions for teaching and research. Until recently, aside
from interest in film and literature, there has been little attention paid to Korean
popular culture in US academia.<span style=""> </span>The
current attraction focuses largely on the <i style="">hallyu</i>
phenomenon. In contrast, South Korean cultural studies scholars have focused on a broader
period, going back to the late 1980s, when the employment of cultural politics
gained ground in the movement for social democracy, and to the early 1990s when
the cultural industries began to gain prominence. We seek contributions for a
comprehensive volume on Korean popular culture from the 1910s to the present. <i style="">The Korean Popular Culture Reader</i> will
situate itself at the intersection of these multiple concerns and points of
departure, and proposes to contribute to the study of contemporary Korean
popular culture by suspending it momentarily from the Asianizing discourses of <i style="">hallyu</i> and re-engaging it within terms
beyond the contemporary as a way of critically expanding on approaches to the
topic in local, regional and global contexts.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The
<i style="">Korean Popular Culture Reader</i>
proposes to analyze and theorize contemporary Korean popular culture and the <i style="">hallyu</i> phenomenon, to recognize its
growth from and existence within a larger context of popular culture beyond
that embraced by <i style="">hallyu</i> fans, and to
understand the social-political dynamics of Korean popular culture over the
past century. </span></p>
