<div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class=MsoNormal><FONT size=3 face="Times New Roman">I wish to alert you to a rich collection of pre-1945 <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Korea</st1:place></st1:country-region> photos now available at the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs room. The images seem to come from a Japanese photographer, judging by the hand writing on the back of the images. While the collection has been recently catalogued at </FONT><A href="http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2010645655"><FONT size=3 face="Times New Roman">http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2010645655</FONT></A><FONT size=3 face="Times New Roman"> the images have not been fully processed for routine viewing or online reference. So to seem them in person you must follow the special procedure there. </FONT></div>
<div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; RIGHT: auto" class=MsoNormal><FONT size=3 face="Times New Roman">However, during a trip to the library to create the wiki project <A href="http://old-koreaphotos.wikispaces.com">http://old-koreaphotos.wikispaces.com</A> and <A href="http://old-japanphotos.wikispaces.com">http://old-japanphotos.wikispaces.com</A>, I was allowed to use my digital camera to copy this set of photos for reference purposes by researchers. Copyright status has not been established, so these are not meant to be used in any form of publication. Today I wish to invite to you browse the images and to apply your expertise by identifying geographic location, social context, cultural practice, names of persons or events or organizations, and so on.</FONT></div>
<div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class=MsoNormal><FONT size=3 face="Times New Roman">Those able to read the handwritten Japanese notes that appear on the back of many photos are particularly encouraged to give the meanings or reflect on the wider significance depicted.</FONT></div>
