Dear Kwang-On,
the 140th anniversary in 2006 (the year of the first nuclear test) indeed marked a certain intensification of related publicity; however, the below has been the official NK version of the Sherman incident for decades, at least since the 1960s. There are a few popular propaganda paintings to illustrate the event, with Kim Ung U in white farmers' clothes leading the villagers with their torches to set the ship aflame. One version is on page 134 of Jane Portal's "Art under Control", although with the wrong caption.
Cheers,

In 2006, North Korea issued a commemorative stamp to mark the 140th anniversary of the sinking of an "imperialist US warship," the General Sherman.

They also fabricated the documentation of the incident. Not only did they make Kim Il-sung's Great-Grandfather, Kim Ung-u, a leader in the battle, but they stated that the captain of the General Sherman was US military personnel and that the ship was manned with 90 "gangsters" armed to the teeth.

North Koreans regard this incident as the start of continuing US Imperialist aggression against North Korea.
The OhMyNews link which I indicated yesterday ends with a rather virulent diatribe against regarding Rev Thomas as a Protestant "martyr," quoting lines written by Han Gyu-Mu, a professor at Gwangju University. I would like to point out that a lengthy account of the life and death of Thomas was published in 1933 in the Transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch: M. W. Oh, The Two Visits of the Rev, R. J. Thomas to Korea. XXII:95-123

In discussing the fate of the (gutted?) General Sherman everything seems to turn on the often repeated assertion that U.S. Naval Archives of 1868 "suggest" that the boat was returned to US authorities. Southerton's book has a footnote to this assertion, I wonder what it says (the Google Books excerpt does not include that note!)? I see that the earliest report (by Pak Chehyon) of a Korean recuperation of what remained of the ship is translated In Vol 2 of Peter Lee's Sourcebook of Korean Civilization pp 309-310
