film industry’s primary concern was no different from the rest of the world’s:

the protection of its domestic films from Hollywood. It had hard time making

films that would match Hollywood’s popularity. Strange things have happened

however over the second decade of the new millennium; Korean cinema now boasts

a moviegoing rate per capita that is best in the world (4.2 per capita), protects

its domestic production with overwhelming majority of the audiences voluntarily

choosing to watch local products over Hollywood’s, and has shot through the

rank among the largest local box offices and exports in the world. Korean

cinema impressed both its local fans and Hollywood producers interested in

remakes and global talents by taking less than a decade--to go from a perilous

state to one of the sturdiest local film industries in the world. This talk

probes the reason behind how South Korea registers the highest movie-going rate

in the world, while defending the title of the most wired nation in the world

in this 21<sup class="" style="">st</sup> Century where it is widely perceived to be a

post-cinema era.<b class="" style=""><o:p class="" style=""></o:p></b></span></div><div class="" style="line-height:150%"><b class="" style=""><span lang="EN-GB" class="" style="">Biography</span></b><span lang="EN-GB" class="" style="">: </span><b class="" style=""><span lang="EN-US" class="" style="">Kyung Hyun Kim</span></b><span lang="EN-US" class="" style=""> is Professor of East Asian Languages and

Literatures and Director of the Critical Theory Emphasis at the University of

California, Irvine. He is the coeditor of <i class="" style="">The

Korean Popular Culture Reader (2014) and the author of <i class="" style="">Virtual Hallyu: Korean Cinema of the Global Era (2011) and <i class="" style="">The Remasculinization of Korean Cinema (2004)<i class="" style="">—all published by Duke University Press.

He has also co-produced both the restoration project of <i class="" style="">The Housemaid</i> (dir. Kim Ki-young, 1960) and its remake that

path he has passed during a period when it is almost inevitable to be

influenced by traditional, modern, Western, Oriental and world music. In this

talk we will listen to a selection of music based on this discussion. In

particular, Won Il will discuss the the phenomenal and particular sound of Korean

music which has preserved the distinctive characteristic of the traditional

culture and art of East Asia in the present era. He will also discuss the

positive meaning traditional sounds and music conveys in today’s rapidly

komponist, fløjtenist, perkussionist, er en af Sydkoreas mest alsidige

musikalske personligheder. Han er i dag kunstnerisk leder / dirigent for The

National Orchestra of Korea ved The National Theatre Of Korea samt professor og

underviser i Korean Traditional Arts ved Korea National University of Arts i

Seoul. I 2004 etablerede han BARAMGOT – et koreansk ensemble med 5 musikere,

kendt for brugen af traditionelle koreanske instrumenter og sin fortolkning og

fornyelse af traditionel koreansk musik. Ensemblet har turneret i Asien, USA og

det meste af Europa. Med sin fusion af traditionel koreansk musik med ny musik

og hans vision om at føre traditionel koreansk musik ud i verden, gerne i

samspil med kunstformer som teater, dans og film, er Won II blandt Sydkoreas

vigtigste fornyere af de traditionelle koreanske usiktraditioner. Won II siger

om behovet for fornyelse:<o:p class="" style=""></o:p></span></div><div class="" style=""><span lang="DA" class="" style="">"Musik er ikke i fokus længere. Vi fokuserer på at

spille, men mister vitaliteten af musikken. Vi har brug for at genopdage

vitaliteten og bringe traditionel musik til moderne teatre og rum. "Won

II´s åbningsværk "New Hearing”, opført i 2012 i forbindelse med hans

overtagelse af lederposten forThe National Orchestra i 2012, præsenterede en

helt ny lyd indenfor orkestermusik for traditionelle koreanske instrumenter og

er et værk, som længe vil blive husket som en historisk begivenhed indenfor den
