<p class="MsoNormal">Purpose: To foster original research and scholarly study on Ganhwa Seon (<i>kanhwa</i> Sŏn
<span lang="ZH-CN" style="font-family:SimSun;mso-fareast-language:ZH-CN">看話禪</span>, the “Zen of investigating meditative topics,” or “questioning meditation”) and to provide an opportunity to experience Ganhwa Seon practice at a traditional Korean monastery,
guided by Seon master Subul <i>Seunim</i>, director of Dongguk University’s International Seon Center and abbot of Beomeo Monastery.

<p class="MsoNormal"> B) Comparisons between Ganhwa Seon and other Buddhist meditative practices (e.g., vipassanā, Tantric visualization exercises, etc.)<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> C) Comparisons between Ganhwa Seon and other religious and mystical practices
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Conference Participants: Professors, lecturers, postdoctoral fellows, and Ph.D students<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Proposal submission deadline: October 31, 2015, title and one-page abstract of your proposed paper (in Korean or English), CV.

<p class="MsoNormal">Notification of Accepted Papers: November 15, 2015<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Deadline for submitting final conference papers: March 31, 2016<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Transportation and accommodations: Papers will be selected by the coordinating committee. Selected scholars will be provided with round-trip economy air fare to Seoul and hotel from 22-24 June 2016. Those delivering papers at the conference
are also welcome to participate in the retreat afterwards, with the same accommodation arrangements as the retreatants. Spouses/companions traveling with scholars attending the retreat will also be expected to participate in the retreat.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>2) Ganhwa Seon Retreat</b>, guided by Seon Master Subul <i>
Seunim</i>, the abbot of Pŏmŏsa and director of Dongguk University’s International Seon Center<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Date: June 24–29, 2016<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Place: Baekdamsa, a traditional Korean monastery deep in the mountains of the Gangwondo region of Korea.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Participants: Professors, lecturers, and Ph. D students in Buddhist Studies; professional meditation teachers and advanced meditation students in Buddhist and other religious traditions. The coordinating committee will select a maximum
of 30 participants from among the applicants for the retreat. Retreatants will be provided with hotel accommodations in Seoul on June 23<sup>rd</sup> and on June 30<sup>th</sup>, with shared lodging. In-country expenses, including accommodations, domestic
transportation between Seoul and Baekdamsa and return, and room and board during the retreat and the following pilgrimage will be provided; airfare to Korea is the responsibility of the retreatant. During the retreat, 2-3 retreatants will share a room at
the monastery, sleeping on traditional floor mats. Simple, and sometimes relatively spicy, Korean vegetarian food will be served at the monastery; the refectory is unable to accommodate special dietary requests. There are separate shower rooms for men and
women. All other expenses, personal or otherwise, are the responsibility of the participants.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>3) Pilgrimage to Traditional Ganhwa Seon Centers<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Date: June 29–30, 2016<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Places to be visited: Bongamsa (discussion with Seon master Jeongmyong
<i>Seunim</i>) & Beomeosa (discussion with Seon master Jiyu <i>Seunim</i>). <o:p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Participants: All retreatants <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Accommodation: all transportation to these monasteries and return to Seoul on June 30<sup>th</sup> will be provided, along with room and board in shared accommodations during the pilgrimage and on the return date in Seoul.

<p class="MsoNormal">Transportation from Incheon airport to your Seoul hotel and return is the responsibility of the participants.
