invention is clear… since the history which became part of the fund of knowledge
or the ideology of nation, state, or movement is not what has actually been
preserved in popular memory, but what has been selected, written, pictured,
popularized and institutionalized by those whose function it is to do so.’
(Hobsbawm 1983, 13).<o:p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15922"></o:p></span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15923"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-US" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15924">It is more than
three decades since Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger published their seminal
text examining the invention of traditions in the creation of national
identity. We would like to produce an edited collection of essays investigating
the invention of tradition in Korea. We believe the
invention of tradition has played a vital role in the creation of North and
South Korean identities as a response to modernization efforts in a divided
nation torn apart by war and polarized by political conflict.</span><o:p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15925"></o:p></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15926"><b id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15927"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:EN-US" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15928">Suggested topics include the

rituals. Invented traditions in private life (food, clothing), invented
traditions in modern South and North Korea, invented traditions amongst the
Korean diaspora, traditions invented during the Colonial Period. </span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-US" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15939">Challenges to the notion of invented traditions in the

the work with a major publisher in Europe or the USA. We
will collect abstracts before the summer, put together a proposal and a working
introduction and send the proposal off to a publisher by the end of
summer 2016, with all full papers in and edited ready for peer review by early
summer 2017. The book would be in a similar format to <i id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15950">Mirror of Modernity: Invented Traditions of Modern Japan</i>, edited by
Stephen Vlastos, University of California Press, 1998, and would be divided
thematically into related sections. All abstracts
should be material that has <u id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1459959055481_15951">not</u> been published and is not intended for
publication elsewhere. The length of the final papers will be: 6-8000 words
