In 1979-1983, North Korean artists travelled to Guyana and worked with Guyanese artists and performers to stage the Mass Games—spectacular multimedia performance played out by thousands of young performers, artists, and musicians presenting group choreography. From 1980, Guyanese artists and performers annually presented the Mass Games for twelve years incorporating some Guyanese cultural elements in the form of the North Korean ritual. Vicki S. Kwon explores transnational art, culture, and ideologies between North Korea and Guyana via their collaborative creation of the Mass Games. Based on the archive materials she found in Guyana in 2015-2016, she curated two exhibitions in Canada and South Korea.
