for working papers for an international conference to celebrate the Korean film
centennial. Since the debut of the “first” Korean film, <i>Righteous Revenge</i>, a kino drama shown at Danseongsa in 1919, Korean
film has unfurled to become part of a global media landscape, traversing such
momentous historic events as imperialism/colonialism, division and the Cold
War, and neoliberal capitalism. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%;margin:0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"> </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%;margin:0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">This conference aims to explore the
ways in which Korean cinema has shaped and transcended boundaries of thoughts,
experiences, and aesthetics both visually and discursively. Moreover, in order to
illuminate the ways in which the past, present, and future of Korean cinema are
inextricably entangled with global cultural flows, this conference seeks to
promote productive discussion and exchange among scholars not only in Korean
film studies, but also in various fields working within interdisciplinary and
transnational methodologies.</p>

Korean Film History:</b> This panel will focus on the
intersections between technology, modernity, and temporality in Korea during
the early 20^th century. How have critical discourses surrounding
colonialism and colonial modernity interacted with the postcolonial turn? What
is the relationship between the global and colonial situation, and how has this
affected Korean cinema? What is implied by the term “History of Korean Cinema”?
What is the relationship between grassroots history and public memory and how
have these perspectives manifested itself in the writing of history, both in
film and otherwise? This panel seeks to trace the contours of the “History of
Korean Cinema” over the past century in order to construct new paradigms in
interrogating this very history.</p>

<p class="gmail-MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%;margin:0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Politics,
Event, and Postmemory:</b> The political aspects of Korean cinema
are deeply intertwined with the Korean War, the subsequent division of the
Korean peninsula, and the historical trauma incurred by these events. The
influence of these events is not only restricted to postwar Korean cinema but
also present in contemporary “Korean blockbusters” which have consistently
dealt with the issues between North and South Korea amid Cold War geopolitics.
This panel aims to re-assess and re-evaluate Korean films through this frame by
illuminating questions of sovereignty, modernization, neoliberalism, and
globalization and how they have coalesced within the political landscape of
Korean film culture.  </p>

<p class="gmail-MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%;margin:0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Post-Hallyu,
Technology, and New Media:</b> One of the emerging trends in Korean
film research has been the necessity of investigating the dynamic interplay and
intersection between technology, the space of the global city, and media
spectacles. This panel focuses on media, spectacle, the experience of the city,
and screen culture in order to raise questions not merely on culture and
modernization, but also to examine methodological questions on examining this
cultural landscape. By utilizing the critical framework of “post-Hallyu,” this
panel explores the relationship between the social functions and aesthetic
forms of film, television, the Internet, and videos and politics, discourses
surrounding collective identity, and media industries.  </p>

<p class="gmail-MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%;margin:0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Women
and Minorities</b>: This panel hopes to address questions
and research pertaining to the history of film feminism beginning in the 1990s,
the relationship between the #MeToo movement and Korean film (industries),
queer representation in Korean films, and the framing of gender and sexuality.
What are ways in which modern discourses of gender/sexuality have served to
normalize (or abnormalize) its manifestations in Korean film? How have social
movements regarding gender and sexuality contributed to the exploration of new
paradigms and theoretical underpinnings of Korean film? Other relevant topics
include the masculinization of Korean film historiography, gender diversity in
Korean film, the dissolution of traditional/nuclear families, film
directors/genres/actors representing women and queer communities, and
independent films and minority emotions/affect. </p>

<p class="gmail-MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%;margin:0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Korean
Cinema in the Asia Network:</b> As a global medium, how have
Korean films interacted with the geopolitics and transnational networks within
Asia? How does situating Korean film and history within this broader global
network create new problematics and paradigms? As the exchange of global
culture becomes more complicated and all-encompassing, how can we re-examine
the binary opposition between cultures of the East and the West? This panel
especially probes into the meanings and forms of Korean films as they have
evolved in contact with other national cultures, along with the identity and
diversity of diasporic films and cultures and their affects within the terrain
of Korean film. </p>

<p class="gmail-MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin:0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 35.45pt;text-align:justify;line-height:150%;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>The Metadiscourses of Genre,
Authorship, and Aesthetics:</b> This panel aims to re-situate
historical discourses surrounding authorship, genre theory, the dichotomy of
realism and modernism, etc. within a contemporary viewpoint. How have these
discourses and theories shaped the way Korean film has been studied,
interpreted, and disseminated? What are the metadiscourses that have
constructed the theoretical frames through which Korean film has been
researched?</p>
