Dear Korean Studies colleagues,

As if the CoViD-19 pandemic were not bad enough in itself, the
fact that the virus was first observed in China has led media and
politicians in Europe (and elsewhere, of course) to speak of the
"Chinese disease" which, in turn, has engendered a sharp rise in
racist attacks against "Asian" looking people in many places in
Europe.
In order to help raise awareness about this phenomenon, the
councils of AKSE and of EAJS (European Association for Japanese
Studies) have decided to publish a joint statement, demanding more
circumspect language from politicians and media. We also hope to
send a sign of solidarity to the victims and potential victims of
these attacks.
The statement can be found here.
Publicity of any kind might help the statement serve its purpose.

With best regards
Marion Eggert
