<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">Kay E Black died peacefully July 5^th at home in San Francisco at age 92. She was predeceased by her husband Andrews D Black in 2010 and is survived by three daughters, their spouses and two grandchildren.<br>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-CA">As sad as we are at our mother’s death, it is with great excitement that we, her daughters, announce that prior to her death, her long awaited book, <i>Ch’aekkori Painting: A Korean Jigsaw Puzzle, </i>was published.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px; font-size: medium;"><span lang="EN-CA"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">Kay’s interest in </span><i style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">ch’aekkori</i><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"> began on a trip to Korea in 1973. This encounter led her to a master’s degree in art history at the University of Denver, further studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, and eventually to a fortuitous meeting with Edward W Wagner of Harvard University.  Beginning in the 1980s, Kay devoted herself to her research of </span><i style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">ch’aekkori</i><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">painting and conducted worldwide research of extant works,</span><i style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"> </i><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">more than 150 in all, in numerous collections. She also collaborated with Wagner and other Korean scholars and eventually published several scholarly articles on Korean art including two ground-breaking works on </span><i style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">ch’aekkori</i><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">.  After Wagner’s death, Gari Ledyard of Columbia University helped in completing the genealogical research started by Wagner, complementing Kay’s analysis of Korean and Chinese books depicted in </span><i style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">ch’aekkori</i><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"> screens. In addressing art historical concerns in </span><i style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">ch’aekkori</i><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">, Kay successfully demonstrated that there were three distinct types, which she called Isolated, Trompe L’Oeil and Still Life and explored their intricate relationships with Chinese and European paintings. Her book, with numerous illustrations, pieces together crucial information regarding Korean </span><i style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">ch’aekkori</i><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"> and provides a comprehensive understanding</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> of the subject.</span></span></div>
