<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;line-height:115%"><font size="2"><b style="font-family:arial,sans-serif">Everydayness and Heritage Practices in 21^st-Century
South Korea<span></span></b></font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;line-height:115%"><font size="2"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif">This panel focuses on the encroachment of the concept of
cultural heritage on present day lives and livelihoods, both in terms of its
temporal scope as well as its inclusion in everyday practices and routines. The
advent of the concept of future heritage in 2012, preceded by repeated updating
of the legal \u201cminimum age\u201d for cultural heritage, and increased emphasis on utilization
of cultural resources for tourism and other monetization have resulted in further
blurring of boundaries between so-called traditional culture and contemporary
Korean everyday life.<span></span></span></font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;line-height:115%"><font size="2"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif">Concretely speaking, panel papers would address how \u201cthe old\u201d
and \u201cthe new\u201d blend together in efforts where people negotiate the preservation
and continuation of traditional arts, crafts, and related intangible cultural
elements, or how incorporating relatively recent cultural expressions in an
ever-increasing realm of cultural \u201cheritage\u201d affects people\u2019s lives. Some concrete
examples of topic areas that this panel envisions are the impact of designation
and preservation of contemporary and future heritage, (social) media landscapes
that help create retro/newtro trends, wanted and unwanted effects of such
developments on the actual lives and livelihoods of citizens, the display of
the post-1945 urbanization, economic growth and cultural development in Korean
museums, local urban history projects, and other spaces and places where
notions of preservation of the (recent) past cross paths with everyday lives
and routines.<span></span></span></font></p>
