In the Song of Songs 2:1-2, the Jewish people are compared to a flower, staying lovely even surrounded by prickly thorns. Some translations talk about a "lily among thorns" instead of a rose. The Zohar, a Jewish text, uses a "thirteen-petalled rose" to represent the thirteen qualities of Divine Mercy mentioned in Exodus 34:6-7. Roses and rosettes were also symbols of kingship and Israel, often included in wreaths worn by grooms at weddings in ancient times.
