Chang
Myŏng-ryong (b. 1934) Born in 1934 in Heilongjiang Province, northeastern China, Chang studied oil painting at the Lu Xun Art University in Shenyang from 1956 to 1959. After the living conditions in China became too severe in the wake of the Great Leap Forward campaign, he settled in North Korea. In the early 1960s Chang became an editor of the magazine Ch'ŏllima, while also continuing his work as a painter and illustrator. Chang now lives in Sinŭiju at the Korean-Chinese border. Many of his works have been displayed in the P'yŏngyang Art Museum, and in 1982 he was honored by the state as an 'Merited Artist.' In the summer of 1996, Chang held a solo exhibit in the Art Gallery of the Yun I-sang Institute in P'yŏngyang. |
