Dear list,

With deep regret and sadness, I report death of Korean student and 
friend, Yi Seung-Jun, a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at 
Cambridge University, who was murdered by a gang of youths at a 
Kingston Park last Thursday from a head injury.  A first murder of 
a Korean in the 30-year history of Koreans in Britain, this is a 
shocking loss for his family, friends and community.

A former political activist with abundant moral idealism and courage, 
he was a promising scholar with a number of scholarships and 
fellowships with his research topic as "South-South relations of non-
governmental organizations", dealing with potential NGO network 
development of Korea with developing nations to foster mutual 
assistance and benefit.  His master's thesis at the London School of 
Economics was on non-governmental organizations, centering on Korea. 

The four youths have surrendered and are in police custody. As 
possibly race-motivated violence, the news has been broadcast in 
Britain and Korea.
