September in Seoul...., what will be going on?

For five days in the fall of this year there will be a new
experiment, a new seed of hope sprouting in the streets of Seoul.
Korea, long renowned for it's resilient people's movements, will be
home to what we hope will be the start of a new age in the
progressive movements of the world. From September 8 to
September 12th of this year, the People's International Conference
will be held in Seoul, Korea under the theme of "People
Challenging the IMF : Neo-liberalism, the IMF and Int'l Solidarity."
Hard-hit by the programs of the IMF, the progressive movements
of Korea have finally realized what may have been evident for
long; that in the age of the international banks, multi-national
corporations, international financial institutions, and free trade
agreements, solidarity with the people of the world and a unified
plan of action is vital in our struggle against neo-liberalism.
Through the conference we will search for an alternative way of
thought and action plan in fighting against neo-liberal globalization
in solidarity with the people from all over the world. Participants
will be able to better understand the essence and reality of
neo-liberal globalization and the IMF's SAPs through the sharing
of the struggles experienced by the people of other countries. We
hope that the solidarity struggle between the world's people against
neoliberal attacks which threaten the survival of the people, such as
the WTO, MAI, IMF, and IBRD can be stimulated through this
     process.
The labor/people's movement of Korea, through solidarity with
the labor/people's movement of the world, wishes to take the first
step in laying the foundation in the great march towards
international solidarity. The international conference will be a
     valuable opportunity for this.

The following organizations and individuals are going to participate
     in the conference.

Professor of economics at the Bremen University in Germany,
Holger Heide, will be the first theme presenter and will speak the
essence and effects of neo-liberal globalization. Colin Hines, who
is an associate of the International Forum on Globalization and the
coordinator of 'Protect the Local Globally' will follow with a
presentation on the people's common demands including alternative
     social/economic norms against neo-liberal globalization. Mexico's
Zapatista has confirmed to join this conference and speak at the
conference about people's alternative strategy based on the
experience of their struggles against neoliberalism.
Thailand's Assembly of the Poor, Indonesia's The Independent
Trade Union of SBSI, and others will also participate and tell us of
each county's situation and of their experiences in the struggle
against neo-liberalism. We are in contact with the trade unions
from Chile, Mexico, and Canada about their participation.
'People's Networks' that have been built over national
boundaries at the regional level as well as the global level are also
expected to participate in this conferance. The PGA, which is
against free trade agreemants and is especially oppposed to the
WTO, had it's inaugural meeting in February of this year an have
confirmed their participation. At the regional level anti-APEC
networks, People Summit and No-to-APEC are expected to attend.
The Asian conference, which had a conference in May, Dacca
     Banggladesh, has confirmed its participation.
Participation from many organizations at the workshops, which
will be held under the themes of privatization, environment, health
care, student movement, unemployment, migrant workers, and urban
poor is also expected. The German branch of Friends of the Earth,
     COURAGE(Philipines), ASEED(Japan), ASEED(Europe) and PRD
students' group(Indonesia) will be participating in the workshops.
We have had more and more calls from organizations which
have asked about participation. ORAM from Mozambique has
notified of it's participation. Both Ends from the Netherlands, a
Left magazine of "El Nuevo Topo" from Sanfrancisco have also
contacted us to say that they will be coming. Englands
Unemployment Action Group has sent us a message of solidarity.
     You can too!

     Preparation for the Conference

25 organizations in Korea such as Korean Confederation of
Trade Unions, Solidarity for Democracy and Progress, People's
Victory 21st are preparing for the international conference in Korea.
Conference preparations have been going smoothly and are on
     schedule.

     We ask for Your Participation

Many organizations have confirmed their participation and the
door is still open for your participation. Your active interest and
paticipation will be a big help to the people of Korea, and to the
people of the world. Also, struggles against the IMF, solidarity
between the people of the world who have been suffering because
of neo-liberalism, the search of an alternative social order for a
new society and a better tomorrow is only possible through your
interest and participation. Send your message of support to the
People's International Conference in Seoul. Organizations or
individuals who wish to participate can contact us at any time.
We are waiting for your call.
