NORTH KOREA ATLAS

I just got a flyer with a sample map (of P'yo^ngyang) on my desk, by
coincidence, and think it might be of interest for quite a number of
scholars on this list -- it's about a 400 page atlas (in 2 vols.) of NORTH
Korea, offered for $2,500 by Pacific Book Trading Co., P.O. Box 382,
Walnut, CA 91788-0382, U.S.A., E-mail: pbtcusa at aol.com

The title of the atlas is:
"Ch'oegu^n Pukhan omanbun chi il chihyo^ngdo"
published by Kyo^ngin Munhwasa (Seoul) in 1997
(in the U.S. Columbia University has a copy in its C.V. Starr East Asian
Library, call number: Ref G7905 .K8 1997 f)

=46rom the description on the flyer:
>>
This is the most up-to-date map of North Korea available in the World
today, accurat to the most minute detail. Initially drafted in 1949 by a
joint Soviet-North Korean survey, the map was continuously updated by the
former Soviet military from 1976 to 1979. In 1981, Soviet military
intelligence employed aerial photography to complete the final draft of the
map, which was originally printed in color with Cyrillic text. (...) The
map shows not only street names and detailed road data but also a great
deal of information such as depth of bodies of water, river flow rates,
load capacities of bridges, etc. In forested areas the map shows
classification of trees, as well as forest heights and densities. (...)
[T]he contents of the map and indices of the map have been translated into
English, Korean, and Chinese language as have been all the street names and
nearby landmark features in each page. The map is published in two volumes,
sized 17.5" x 24" (44 cm x 60 cm), each containing North Korean territory
north or south of 40=FB10'. (...) The first of its kind ever offered at
1:50,000 scale (...).
