Dear Jan,

During the late ChosOn Period, the main road from Seoul to Kongu was as
follow: (ri, 10 ri=about 4 Km), [present place name]

*
KyOngsa[Seoul]--Tongjakchin-(10)-Kwach'On-(20)-Kalsan-(10)-MirUktang-(20)-HwasOng[SuwOn]-(10)-Ryuch'On-(5)-ChungjO-(25)-Ch'OnghoyOk-(30)-Chinwi-(8)-Sosa-(30)-SOnghwanyOk-(20)-Ch'Onan-(40)-KUmgyeyOk-(18)-TOkp'yOng-(10)-Ch'ryOng-(15)-Kwanghoech'ang-(20)-MorowOn-(25)-
Konju

**
KyOngsa-Tongjakchin-(12)-SUngbangp'yOng-(4)-Namt'aeryOng-(7)-Kwach'On-(7)-IndOgwOn-(8)-KalsanjOm-(3)-SahyOnp'yOng-(9)-Chijidae-(5)-SuwOn-(15)-Haryuch'On-(15)-ChungmihyOn-(15)-OsanjOm-(8)-Chinwi-(12)-Taebaekch'i-(10)-KarwOn-(8)-Kach'On-(2)-SosajOm-(10)-Agyo-(3)-HonggyOngbi-(7)-SOnghwanyOk-(10)-SugarwOn-(5)-Chiksan-(5)-PyOngjangsUngu-(7)-It'ori-(13)-Ch'Onan-(10)-SamgOri-(5)-KUmjeyOk-(15)-TOkp'yOngjOm-(10)-WOn'gi-(10)-Ch'aryOng-(5)-InjewOn-(5)-KwangjOngyOk-(5)-KungwOn-(10)-MorowOn

* SOyugu, <<Yeguji>>: <<ImwOn kyongjeji>> 5, Seoul: PogyOngmunhwasa 1983
(photomechanical reprint), 560-561
** Kim ChOngho, <<Taedong chiji>>, Seoul: Aseamunhwasa 1976
(photomechanical reprint), 539

Some additional remarks of Paik

1. Kim ChOngho gieves us more detailed information than So Yugu.
2. Some places names are not identical: cf. KumgyeyOk in SO, KumjeyOk in
Kim.
3. Kongju was excluded in Kim's book.
4. To identify place names, we should look up them in Upchis or local
gazettes from ChosOn Period.
5. To map the main road, we have to search the place names in maps from
traditional Korea, such as TaedongyOjido and/or Ch'Onggudo.
6. To know whether the main road had changed between 15th and 19th
century, we should compare the place names with the names of stations in
KyOngguk taejOn. (<<KyOngguk taejOn>>, Seoul: Aseamunhwasa 1983,
photomechanical reprint, 118-132 ("ch'albang", chief officers for
stations)).

Sincerely,

Paik Sungjong
