Dear Jackie:

This business of trying to determine who the PCVs were and how that
experience might or might not have shaped their scholarship on Korea is
getting kind or silly. As is the 60s generation and their "commitment"
and how later "activists" might or might not have been influenced by their
generational position to write or act in a certain way. One of the
problems of such concerns is that it is a field in and of itself. Only a
miniscule number of PCV from 1967-1990 went back into Korean studies. Not
all PCV's were anti-war activists. But there is a book for you to write.
As for how An and Yi were treated in the last few generations of books on
Korea wouldn't you expect differences, mistakes, occlutions, ommissions?
The simple way these things get pushed forward is to do the work and
publish your results, then we can recognize the development of our
understanding. To launch into a project of self-reflection deters us from
doing the necessary spade work.
