FULBRIGHT FORUM!!

Fulbright in Seoul (the Korean American Educational Commission) is pleased
to invite you to attend the Fulbright Forum for November, which will be held
on Wednesday, November 3, 1999, at 6:30 p.m. at the Commission offices in
Anguk-dong. This is likely to be the last Forum in the old offices before
Fulbright moves to Mapo.

This month's forum speaker will be: Mr. Antti Leppanen, Ph.D. candidate in
Cultural Anthropology, University of Helsinki, Korean Government research
scholarship holder, and research student in the Department of Anthropology
at Seoul National University.

Mr. Leppanen's topic is:

"MAKING MONEY IS HARD": MEN AND WOMEN OF SMALL NEIGHBORHOOD BUSINESSES

This study is of a group often neglected in scholarship. Small businesses
such as general stores, restaurants, rice mills, etc., in which couples
often work together, provide an interesting setting to study how Korean
concepts of family and family ideology are worked out in an environment
which greatly differs from the one in which such ideology originated. The
study is also expected to provide a picture of the process of running a
business in an average lower middle-class Seoul neighborhood.

We welcome to the Forum all Fulbrighters, senior lecturers and junior
researchers, as well as Board Members, Fulbright alumni, Peace Corps alumni,
Korean studies scholars, foreign graduate students, and other friends of
Korea and members of the Fulbright family.

The presentation will be followed by a reception (lots of hors-d'oeuvres!).
We hope many friends will come to enjoy the lecture, the discussion, the
food, and the liquid refreshment.

Place: Fulbright offices
(Kohap Building Suite 403. Take the #3 orange line to stop #18, Anguk
Station, and walk out by exit #5, to the 4th bldg on the right (with a
garish "Happylon" sign in English.)

Date: Wednesday, November 3, 1999

Time: 6:30 p.m.

See you on the 3rd!

(RSVP and directions: Miss Park, 732-7922)
