[KS] Non-official material on Korea's external relations

My own view is that the best place to start, for non-published material, is
still A guide to manuscripts and documents in the British Isles relating to
the Far East, compiled by Noel Matthews and M. Doreen Wainright, edited by
J. D. Pearson, published by Oxford University Press, Oxford UK, in 1977.
There are several entries for Korea, and other entries can lead one towards
Korean material.
In addition to what appeared there, there are more missionary archives at
SOAS, together with some Chinese Customs Material. The United Society for
the Propagation of the Gospel records are in Oxford. Sir Harry Parkes (first
British minister to Korea) private papers are in Cambridge, while the Satow
and Jordan papers are in the Public Record Office. Some of Isabella Bird's
original photographs are in the Royal Geographical Society's collection etc
etc.

If you are in London in late July I would be happy to see you and talk more
about this - I once began a project to compile detailed lists of
Korean-related material - but I will be away in the first half of the
month. My daytime telephone number is from Korea 44-20-7270-6930, or
020-7270-6930 within the UK, or 7270-6930 from within London. There are of
course people such as Professor Deuchler at SOAS who will know more than I
do on this subject. You should also be aware that there will be very little
information about Koreans in Britain, since there were very few of them.

Best wishes

Jim Hoare
