I believe I got the translation "slave" for J<Ch boku from Mathews
("slave, servant"), but I rather like Nelson's translation "manservant",
for it preserves the masculinity of the term, nicely reflected in the
pronominal usage. (I understand that young Japanese sometimes use the term
for ego reference, but I assume that is a passing affectation.)
As to the existence of an institution like "slavery", that is probably a
whole 'nother can of worms, better left for the social historians.
So I will correct my translation to "manservant" in any future
