Dear Korea Encyclopaedia Contributors, and others interested in this work.

A statement about the present state of the Encyclopaeia of Korea is well
overdue. The Encyclopaedia, consisting of thirteen hundred and fifty
articles, an extensive cross-referenced index, one hundred and fifty film
negatives, and other material to form a comprehensive manuscript, was
despatched to the publisher in May 1999. It was my intention to notify
contributors and others interested via this medium, first, to answer the
obvious question, =B3When will it be published?=B2 And then to say that becaus=
e
of the time lapse where changes had occurred since the articles written, it
would be necessary to undertake some revision, in conjunction with the
contributor.

The publisher, Kegan Paul International (London office) has, unfortunately,
been uncooperative in failing to give any indication as to when the
Encyclopaeia is to go to print. Except for an acknowledgement that the
manuscript had been receive by KPI, I am unable to find out what progress,
if any, is being made. I suspect very little. I am extremely frustrated b=
y
the publisher=B9s attitude and the present situation is grossly unfair to
contributors and sponsors of the project, indeed to all who have been
concerned in any way with the Encyclopaedia=B9s production.

To those of you who have been disturbed by my silence on this matter, my
unreserved apology. If you wish to make a personal representation to Kegan
Paul International, and I would certainly welcome your help here, the firm=B9=
s
e-mail address is:
