FULBRIGHT FORUM!!

Fulbright in Seoul (the Korean American Educational Commission) is pleased
to invite you to attend the Fulbright Forum for September, which will be
held on Thursday, September 28, 2000, at 6:30 p.m. at the Commission
offices in Mapo.

The speaker this month, appropriate for this 50th anniversary of both
Fulbright in Korea and the Korean War, will be Dr. Horace G. Underwood,
speaking on his experiences in the Korean War. H.G. Underwood was in Korea
when the war began, rejoined the U.S. Navy as an intelligence officer, and
came ashore as part of the Inchon landing and the retaking of Seoul. When
the armistice negotiations began with the North, he served for two years as
the senior interpreter to the U.N. command at Panmunjom. Dr. Underwood will
speak briefly of the background of the war and in more detail of his
experiences and particularly of negotiating with the North Koreans, a topic
which has suddenly become of great renewed interest.

Dr. Underwood, a lifelong educational missionary of the Presbyterian Church
(USA) retired in 1982 as Professor of Education at Yonsei University, and
continues to serve on the university's Board of Trustees. In 1960-61 and
again from 1981 to 1994 he served as a member of the Korean Fulbright
Commission.

This Forum is the first of the Fulbright program year, and is an opportunity
to greet the new Fulbright scholars and graduate students who have arrived
over the summer. We welcome to the Forum all Fulbrighters, senior lecturers
and junior researchers, as well as Board Members, Fulbright alumni, Peace
Corps alumni, Korean studies scholars, foreign graduate students, and other
friends of Korea and members of the Fulbright family.

The presentation will be followed by a reception (in lieu of dinner.) We
hope many friends will come to enjoy the lecture, the discussion, the food,
and the liquid refreshment.
