This indeed happened a couple of years ago according to the Maastricht
Treaty of 1991, ratification 1993. Since then EU is the official term. 

Does anybody know about a good website on East Asian regional integration
(except the Tumen River Area Development Project)? I think there were some
talks and ideas on a zone like the NAFTA or so, but I somehow lost track of
it and would really like to know how things have developed in the last years.
