Subject: U of Michigan Colloquium Series: Prof. Shultz

ANNOUNCEMENT: The University of Michigan
Korean Studies Colloquium Series Present:

Edward J. Shultz,
Professor of History
University of Hawai'i--West Oahu

"Generals and Scholars in Medieval Korea"

Thursday, October 5, 2000, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
1080 South University
International Institute, SSWB #1644

Professor Shultz will speak on the period of military rule in Koryo from
1170 to 1270. Rather than jettisoning civil institutions and personnel,
the new military leaders soon discovered they could best rule through a
reassertion of civil values and the employment of scholars. Prof.
Shultz
will link these developments in Korea with the rest of East Asia,
especially Japan, as he seeks to explain why Korea experienced only a
century of military rule.
