DIRECTOR OF THE ASIA INSTITUTE 

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES

UCLA invites nominations and applications for the position of founding
Director of the newly created Asia Institute, effective July 1, 2003. The
Institute fosters collaboration, coordination, and innovation among six
research centers (Buddhist Studies, Chinese Studies, Korean Studies,
Japanese Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, and Comparative and
Interdisciplinary Research on Asia), two interdisciplinary degree programs
(East Asian and Southeast Asian Studies), and two National Resource Centers
designated by the federal Department of Education (on East Asia and
Southeast Asia). The Asia Institute is also responsible for expanding
UCLA¡?s programs in South Asian studies.

The Asia Institute was created in order further to enhance the quality,
scope and international prominence of Asia programs at UCLA. The Director
is responsible for leading all the Institute¡?s activities, including
developing new initiatives and raising funds to support them.

The Director reports to the Vice Provost of the UCLA International
Institute (of which the Asia Institute is a part). The Director will be
appointed for a term of five years, renewable once. The Director will also
hold a tenured professorship in one of UCLA¡?s departments and schools. 

Applicants should have a distinguished record of academic achievement
appropriate to the rank of full professor as well as high visibility in
scholarly and other communities of importance to Asian studies. Candidates
should have demonstrated a capacity for academic and administrative
leadership and for engaging diverse constituencies at the local, state,
national and international levels.
