[KS] Early 19th-century Korea, China, and European missionaries

Dear List Members:

I'm writing w/ a bibliographic query.  A colleague of mine ran across in 
a Japanese essay on the Ryukyu Islands a reference to the Koreans asking 
the Qing sometime before 1845 (maybe in the 1830s) to deal with 
Europeans seeking to do missionary work in Korea.  Could anyone give me 
some bibliographic leads on where I can read a little about that 
matter?
