John Feffer's North Korea/South Korea: U.S. Policy in a Time of
Crisis, hailed as "the most balanced account of the North Korean
'threat' " by Japan scholar Chalmers Johnson, is now available from
Seven Stories Press.

As media coverage of this Korean threat grows, scholars are faced
with the challenge of providing an accessible introduction to the
conflict beyond the threat, to the complex and historical
underpinnings of this divided region. "There is no country of
comparable significance concerning which so many people are
ignorant," American anthropologist Cornelius Osgood adroitly noted
about Korea. North Korea/South Korea is a needed corrective that is
in-step with the growing interest in, and study of, the region
itself. Beginning with the present crisis, Feffer takes a long look
back, chronicling the partition of the Peninsula and creation of the
DMZ; U.S. intervention and presence in the region, historic and
present; and the formation of North and South Korean ethos, as
affected by nascent national identities, the varying influence of
Confucianism, and the North's isolationism. Discursively examining
the strategy and motivations of each of the parties to the current
conflict, Feffer concretely suggests tenable and needed alternatives
that address the region's volatility. (See T.O.C below.)

Introduction: The Current Crisis
Chapter One: Conquered and Divided
Chapter Two: The View from Pyongyang
Chapter Three: The View from Washington
Chapter Four: Gunboat Globalization
Conclusion: The Road to Unification
