An invitation to contribute to Kyoto Journal #59:
The cultural dynamism of Korea


Kyoto Journal is an all-volunteer-produced English language independent
quarterly, founded in 1986. Our aim is to present thought-provoking
"perspectives on Asia," avoiding stereotypes or superficial reporting. We
have published 56 issues so far, and have been shortlisted seven years
consecutively by Utne Reader for its Alternative Press Awards under
categories including Excellence in Art & Design, Local/Regional Coverage,
Writing Excellence, and Best Essays.

KJ is distributed in Japan, Canada and the USA, with subscribers worldwide.

Each year we publish a special theme issue, and for 2005 we have decided to
focus on Korea. Believing that more than enough coverage has been given to
"divided Korea," we would like to present a fresh, positive view of the
Korean people's cultural dynamism. What is it that makes Korea Korean? We
seek to illuminate ongoing patterns in Korean culture that enrich people's
lives in the present day and that will continue to be indispensable to
future society, whatever the political circumstances. We want to identify
emerging cultural trends (for example new artists, writers; cyber-culture)
as well as ever-relevant traditions.

We are also interested in exploring the different visions for Korea
expressed concurrently by older and younger generations. What do they hope
for, or aspire to? What might be the cultural consequences of reunification
of North and South? Is there, indeed, a cultural basis that would support
reconciliation? We are especially keen to feature Korean voices and views.

We warmly invite writers, photographers and graphic artists to contribute to
this special issue. We look forward to receiving thought-provoking proposals
for articles or visual material, suggestions regarding interview subjects:
men and women with unique perspectives to explore, or suggestions regarding
articles in Korean that would contribute usefully to the understanding of
Korea, if translated. Proposals or suggestions should reach us by April
30th. The deadline for actual material will be October 1st.

As an all-volunteer production, KJ is not able to pay contributors, but we
offer a free subscription as a token of our appreciation, and the
opportunity to be part of a special and unique publication.
