FULBRIGHT FORUM!

Fulbright in Seoul (the Korean American Educational Commission) is pleased
to invite you to attend the Fulbright Forum for May, which will be held on
Friday, May 14, 2004, at 6:30 p.m. at the Commission offices in Mapo.

The speaker this month will be Alzaruba, Fulbright Scholar and a
multi-discipline visual and performance artist with over 100 exhibitions and
numerous awards. He is currently teaching Experimental Directions in Fine
Art at Sungkyunkwan University and researching contemporary and historic
Korea art. He is based in Baltimore, Maryland where he teaches at Towson
University and the Maryland Institute College of Art.

The title of his talk, "Hand in Hand: Perspectives on Collaborative Art in
Korea", will introduce the audience to his public experiences in three
venues:
·	A new, four-person performance, "Recycled Ocean," in the 2003 Korea
Experimental Arts Festival.
·	The impact of Korea in his watercolors for the 2004 Soul International
Contemporary Art Fair.
·	The construction of "Hand in Hand," a 12-meter-long ship-shaped enclosure
around one of the large ginkgo trees on Daehagno (University Avenue). It
opens to the public May 8 as part of the Jungno district’s celebration "The
Weight of Walking," which includes an international range of new artworks
installed along the resurfaced sidewalks. This work was constructed with the
collaboration of his students, in which their input shaped and changed the
installation.

Alzaruba says, "The contemporary Korean art scene is rapidly reaching a
fever pitch of cultural upheaval, growth and experimentation, comparable in
its own way, to what happened to America during the 60’s. There is a
remarkably common interest in high tech aspects here that I’ve not seen
elsewhere, even in New York’s more sophisticated and much more complex
scene. The vast array of opportunities available for visual artists in Korea
is remarkable and is yet far from being fully realized. It is my belief that
Korea holds the edgy potential of becoming one of the most exciting art
scenes on Earth within the next few years, especially if the North-South
dialogues are successful."

The lecture will be supplemented by images and video and will cover
additional artwork in preparation for his first solo exhibition at Gallery
175 at Anguk, June 2.

We welcome to the April Fulbright Forum all Fulbrighters, senior scholars,
graduate students and ETAs, as well as Board Members, Fulbright alumni,
Peace Corps alumni, Korean studies scholars, foreign graduate students, RAS
members, and any other interested friends of Korea or members of the
Fulbright family in Korea.

The presentation will be followed by a buffet reception.  We hope many
friends will come to enjoy the lecture, the discussion, and the food.
