KOREAN SAMULNORI PERCUSSION

June 27-July 1

SamulNori is the contemporary form of traditional
rural percussion bands (nongak, p'ungmul)
stretching back into antiquity. Today, SamulNori
is the most popular of Korea's traditional music,
equally at home in the countryside or on urban
stages, part of the student-led revival of
interest in heritage but featuring complex
rhythmic pieces. Today there are several dozen
professional SamulNori bands and many hundreds of
amateur bands active in Korea. The rhythmic
structure is based on model cycles, changdan,
elaborated through variants known as karak. The
repertory splits into pieces performed seated and
pieces danced. Four instruments are core: the
double-headed hourglass drum (changgo), small
hand-held gong (kkwaenggwari), barrel drum (puk)
and large hand-held gong (ching). Performing
SamulNori involves imbibing an aesthetic frame
tied to Taoism and shamanism, in which the body
and body movement become one with the
instruments. The quartet of instruments, and the
music itself, is said to create balance in the
cosmos, combining yin and yang, thunder and
lightning, wind and rain, and the four seasons.

Introductory lectures on Korean music will also
be offered by British and European specialists.
Two classes will be offered, one designed for
non-Korean speakers and one using Korean. Each
class is restricted to 20 participants and will
comprise a mix of sessions, some mixing all four
instruments and some concentrating on single
instruments.

Course Leaders: Musicians from the National
Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts,
Seoul.

The workshop is sponsored by Korea Foundation and
jointly promoted by SOAS and Nori Productions.
