Overview

Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for Public
Services, the Head provides innovative and strategic leadership for the
University’s Asia Library in support of its role as a premier resource for
East Asian Studies at the University of Michigan.  The Head of the Asia
Library holds responsibility for:  ensuring that excellent user-centered
services meet the constantly evolving needs of the University’s large and
diverse user community; informing the campus and broader community of the
Asia Library’s resources and services; providing executive oversight of
substantial collection, revenue and personnel budgets; and fostering a
collegial, productive environment for library staff.  Context  The
University of Michigan’s Asia Library has a long and distinguished tradition
of building and providing access to comprehensive collections (both print
and, more recently, electronic) of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean on East
Asia.  These collections are particularly strong in the humanities and
social sciences and support doctoral level studies in those areas.  The Asia
Library has a strong history of successful partnerships with the College of
Literature, Science, and the Arts, the International Institute, the Center
for Chinese Studies the Center for Japanese Studies, the Korean Studies
Program, and the China Data Center.  The Asia Library is considered to be
among the top five libraries of its kind in the United States.

The Asia Library has also been a leader in the integration of information
technology into its processes and services as evidenced by the nearly 2,000
electronic CJK resources.  The Library continues to make numerous Asian
databases easily accessible to the scholarly world through its web page; and
onsite through a computing facility devoted to CJK resources.

In the past year, the University Library implemented the Aleph and Metalib
systems of Ex Libris, which provide enhanced access to CJK as well as other
non-Roman materials.  More recently, the Library announced a historic
partnership with Google to digitize the library’s collections in their
entirety over a several year period.

The University of Michigan, a leader in undergraduate and graduate education
and one of the world’s premier research universities, hosts renowned
faculty, rigorous academic programs, and diverse cultural and social
opportunities in a stimulating intellectual environment.  Collaboration
among the various centers and programs engaged in international studies is
considered “one of the nation's broadest assemblies of interdisciplinary
centers and programs organized around area studies”.

Responsibilities

1) Positions the Asia Library as a recognized leader in the delivery of
scholarly information through an appropriate array of services, programs,
and creative applications of technology.

2) Fosters productive and collaborative relationships with directors,
chairs, faculty, and administrators in the relevant centers and programs and
within the College of the Literature, Sciences and Arts.

3) Provides leadership for the Asia Library and within the University
Library
by:

• Guiding, inspiring and supporting the Asia Library staff.
• Representing the Asia Library within the University Library on the Public
Services Council, Senior Managers Group, and the Collection Management and
Development Council.
• Developing innovative long-range efforts, and assessment of programs and
services in carrying out the library’s objectives.
• Participating in fundraising and grant-seeking activities.

4) Represents the Asia Library and University Library through professional
service and affiliations, including:

• Engagement in scholarly activities.
• Professional affiliations and involvement at national and international
levels.
• Developing and maintaining collegial relationships with other colleagues
in East Asian collections.

Required Qualifications

• ALA accredited Master’s degree, or an equivalent combination of a relevant
and advanced degree and experience.

• Minimum five years of management experience in an academic library with
increasing levels of responsibility and demonstrated leadership skills.

• Fluency in one or more languages in support of the University of
Michigan’s East Asian scholarly programs.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with
faculty, staff, and students of culturally diverse backgrounds.

• Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication (oral and written)
skills.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience in successfully leading collaborative efforts to enhance user
services and to develop innovative resources.

• Ability to respond creatively to rapidly changing academic, library, and
East Asian research.

• Strong user-centered commitment to public service, including outreach and
service excellence.

• High level of knowledge of emerging information technologies.

• Familiarity with issues, trends, and operational needs of research
libraries, and specifically with East Asian studies.

• Demonstrated record of substantial professional achievements.

• Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and active involvement in
the library profession.

Rank, Salary, and Leave:  Rank is anticipated at full Librarian.  Final rank
and salary are dependent on qualifications and experience.  As a
professional appointment in the University of Michigan University Library,
